The accused have been identified as 19-year-old Ranjit Gupta Shah of Khudda Jassu village and Sushil Kumar alias Lota of Khuda Ali Sher village. They were involved in petty crimes in the past as well, the police said.
A Maruti Alto car was recovered from Ranjit, which was stolen on New Year’s Eve from Sector 26. The car allegedly belongs to Ranjit’s acquaintance and he had displayed a fake registration number. Both the accused are BA students in a local government college.
While Ranjit’s father is an auto-rickshaw driver, Shushil is the son of a Punjab police sub-inspector, the police said.
On Tuesday night, at around 3.30 am, the duo gained entry into Bal Bhawan in Sector 23 at gunpoint and detained watchman Hari Singh and his colleague in a room and took away two computers, a mobile phone, and a wallet containing Rs 150. They also took away the receiver of a landline phone and cut its cable before leaving, claimed the watchmen.
Ranjit had been taking dance classes at the Bhawan at a workshop conducted about a fortnight ago. According to ASP (Central) Madhur Verma, the accused were arrested after watchman Hari Singh identified Ranjit. He told the police that Ranjit had attended classes at the Bhawan, which led to their arrests. Incidentally, the pistol used in the
crime turned out to be a cigarette lighter.
