Kolkata In an embarrassing development for Bengal cricket, a top player of the senior state team has been accused of tampering with the ball during the course of a crucial first division club match yesterday.

Bengal batsman Anustup Majumdar, who plays for Kalighat Club, has been accused of applying grease on the ball during his team’s curtailed CAB league match against Md Sporting Club.

Md Sporting brought the allegation against Majumdar today, a day after the match was abandoned following charges of ball-tampering against Kalighat bowler Avik Chowdhury yesterday at High Court ground.

Majumdar, however, rubbished the charges hurled at him by Md Sporting Club officials. The CAB and the umpires of the match, too, maintain that there has been no instance of ball-tampering. The match was called off after fights broke between the two teams’ camps yesterday when the first accusations of ball-tampering came up against Chowdhury.
