Chandigarh “Both BT cotton and BT Brinjal have adverse effects on humans and should be banned in India,” said Jeffrey Smith, an expert on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) while speaking in a lecture organised at Law Bhawan on Saturday.

Smith, director, Institute for Responsible Technology, Washington and an author with international best-sellers like Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette to his credit, said: “In my experience over the years, I have never come across a country where a particular crop that originated there, goes in for a modified variety of the same.”

He said the government needs to step in and come up with an alternate policy that bans both BT cotton as well as BT Brinjal, “before it is too late”.

Smith is in India to participate in the nationwide campaign, titled ‘I am no lab rat’ that was launched in Chandigarh on Friday and will be carried across to Amritsar and Ludhiana.

Talking about the campaign, Smith said: “The campaign will be carried across the country with a view to urge the government for a ban on both the products. In India, brinjal is used in medicines. By modifying the form of the crop, it might stop having the effect. Thus, we urge the government to formulate a policy decision on the same.”

Smith has conducted a research which proves that BT cotton causes skin allergies in individuals. He had also conducted a study of its effect on animals, which proves that BT cotton, besides causing health related problems, can also prove fatal.

Smith added: “There is irrefutable and overwhelming evidence to prove that GMOs are dangerous, which is more than sufficient to ban them.”

BT Cotton is Killing Us - Ban It Immediately by Dr. Sudhir Kumar Kaura on 03 Sep 2010

My concern is that, nature brings about genetic changes at her own pace though not so forcible as we do with gene guns and so on and it produces on in one billion or less mutations. But we are doing it so fast we are producing in few years trillions or more of seed/plants pe. How can nature stand those variations? It will fire back? I met a person in Bhattu Kalan Town (near Hisar, Haryana, Inda about two years back an don the way back from that town I also came across a young shepherd about 12-15 years old who told me that his sheep had diarrhoea after grazing on BT cotton plants and after that I discovered lots of deaths of sheep and goats due to grazing on BT cotton in our area, thanks to little shepherd, I have a photograph of him.
