Gurgaon, February 27 The Gurgaon administration has notified all banks in the suburb to open a zero-balance account for Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe students in government schools, at the latest by March 5, in light of the state government’s announcement of cash scholarships for these students last week.

According to the announcement, SC/ST students are now to receive cash scholarships instead of the material relief granted to them till now.

Sushil Batra, the district education officer, said around 45,000 SC students will benefit from the scheme. At a meeting called by deputy commissioner Rakesh Gupta, various officials from nationalised banks were told that accounts should preferably be made out in the name of the mothers of the students.

Directing bank officials to visit schools in case the number of students in one school exceed 20, Gupta said: “The scheme ought to be implemented in its true aspect and the administration will not like to hear any excuses for non compliance.”

Students belonging to backward classes in Haryana government schools get Rs 75 per month as attendance prize, along with a stipend of Rs 100 per month. They are also given Rs 150 per annum for stationery, Rs 200 for purchasing dictionaries, Rs 100 for a school bag, Rs 500 for uniforms and Rs 500 for purchasing sweaters, shoes and socks during the winter every year. In addition to this, girls belonging to this category, who have to travel a distance of over 2 km to attend school, will be given Rs 2,000 to purchase a bicycle. The whole amount is now to be deposited in nationalised bank near the schools.
