Chandigarh A walk through the sector where he resides proved to be an eye-opener for Union Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal. The incident occurred when the minister, who lives in Sector 28, went for a walk to the green belt in the area.

Upon reaching the green belt, Bansal found paver blocks arranged in a haphazard manner, construction waste lying all around, after which he summoned area councillor Devinder Singh Babla and other concerned officials to the spot.

Bansal then apprised them of the condition the green belt and undertook a tour of the market. The lack of cleanliness and heaps of construction waste at different points were noted down as areas to be dealt with on a priority basis. An MC official said: “The work for installing fountains is being undertaken in the green belt. Trucks that carry material had driven over the paver blocks, which led to such a condition. Repair work will start at the earliest.” The problem of proper disposal of construction waste is present in almost all the sectors across the city. While those throwing construction wastes on the roadside, if caught, can be fined Rs 500, this does not prove to be a deterrent.

Councillor Devinder Singh Babla said that while regular inspections are conducted, some things need to be taken care of. “We will look into those and the eyesores will be removed,” he said. He added that Bansal would be undertaking a tour of all sectors across the city in the next few days.
