Pune, January 5
In order to stop the illegal constructions along the Ramnadi, the civic administration has decided to lay a barbed wire fence along the river at an approximate cost of Rs four crore. The project will be undertaken under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and will one-and-a-half years to complete. Garden superintendent of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Yashwant Khaire said, “We are going to start with the laying of a fence along the Ramnadi in the Pune municipal limit. The work will kick off this month and the total cost of the project is Rs 4 crore.”
Ramnadi — a 20-km long river which originates near Pashan and then flows through Bavadhan, Baner and Aundh — is now synonymous to the PMC’s apathy towards illegal constructions and hutments mushrooming in the city. The monsoon flooding of Ramnadi revealed that there has been encroachment, following which a survey was undertaken jointly by the PMC and district administration to list out encroachments along the river path and initiate action against the encroachers.
