Vadodara The Baroda Medical College (BMC) will soon set up its own poison resource centre. In fact, every medical college in the state will now have its own poison centre, the nodal centre being in Ahmedabad.

The centre, which will be under the pharmacology department, will work as an information centre for providing first-hand information on the nature of poison consumption and first-aid remedy for it.

“There is a categorical database formulated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which is used as per the requirement of every country and state. A database on the nature of poisoning instances in Vadodara is under construction,” said V S Mazmudar of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine.

Apart from providing information on the common antidote and treatment strategy as a first-hand remedy, the poison resource centre will also constitute a specialised unit for treating victims of poisoning in the city.

“This is a Herculean task, as we require specialised equipment and manpower for the centre. We have drafted a proposal with the help of the Department of Pharmacology and Medicine,” said A Leuva, Dean, BMC.

While most cases of poisoning come from various industries in the city, the WHO database is being tailored as per the city needs.

“There are cases from the remote areas and villages on the consumption of poisonous leaves and also from the industrial zones on the intake of injurious gases. This centre can be useful for them as the first measure,” said Leuva.
