Kolkata The CPM, which is now desperate to win back the support of the voters, has now fallen back on 97-year-old Jyoti Basu — confined to his house for quite some time — to do the job on its part.

The Communist veteran has issued a statement exhorting voters to vote for the Left Front in the November 7 Assembly by-elections saying that in these troubled times, only Marxists can bring back peace to the state. He has also exhorted Congress supporters to vote for the Left Front.

“This election is very important for the state. We did very badly in the last parliamentary elections as many people voted against us. I will not blame those who went against us because we could not convince them. Apart from that we made mistakes too in some places,” Basu’s statement read. The Maoists and the Trinmool Congress have joined hands and have unleashed a reign of terror in the state, it added.

“In the Lok Sabha elections, the Opposition flooded us with promises but none of them could be met. Prices of all essential commodities have soared but the Central government is not doing anything. The Opposition has taken resort to violence. It is the Marxists who brought peace and democracy in this state and we request you to help us so that the state does not plunge into choppy times,” the former chief minister stated.
