Kolkata The medical bulletin issued by the hospital said Basu had an episode of irregularity of heart beat last night, which was treated adequately. There has been no significant improvement in his condition and he continues to be on partial ventilation support. His vitals remain more or less same as yesterday. He is tolerating Ryle’s tube feeding. Former prime H D Deve Gowda and Kerala chief miniser V S Achyutanandan visited the veteran Communist at the hospital. Gowda later said when he told Basu he wanted to talk to him, the CPM patriarch responded. “His brain is functioning,” the former PM said.

Drug-resistant bacteria hindering recovery
Three highly drug-resistant bacteria are responsible for the pneumonia infection Basu is suffering from, according to a critical care specialist at the AMRI hospital.

A bronchoscopy confirmed the presence of acinatobactor, paseudomonas and klebselia bacteria, Sursut Banerjee of the AMRI said. “We have sent the samples to the laboratory for culture sensitivity and a report is expected tomorrow... After receiving the report, we will determine the exact type of anti-biotic to be administered to check the infection,” Banerjee said, adding insertion of Riles, oxygen and oral tubes in the last three or four days might have caused fresh infection. Stating that Basu’s condition was still critical, Banerjee said his blood pressure was 130/70-80. “His urination and heart beat are normal and his brain is responding,” the doctor said. He said the former chief minister was not given sedatives during the day. “He is on partial ventilation,” he said.

AMRI docs consult AIIMS experts
Doctors attending on the ailing Marxist leader today held a video-conference with experts at AIIMS in Delhi. “It was focussed on how better his health could be managed,” AIIMS Medical Superintendent Dr D K Sharma said. An AIIMS doctor who was part of the video-conferencing said, “The treatment being given by doctors on Basu is all right and well managed. We will continue to interact and help in any way that we can.”

100-year-old former aide prays for Basu
Vidyamohan Roy, who is over 100 years old and a one-time associate of former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, has been praying for the recovery of the veteran Communist. A retired employee of the now defunct Bengal-Dooars railway, Roy said he had lost his job for joining the railway workers’ movement led by Basu in the Dooars in North Bengal in the ‘40s. “I am too old to vividly remember details of the movement, but I can recall how Jyoti Basu gave leadership to the railway workers’ movement in the Dooars. I am too weak to move, but I pray to God that he bless Jyoti Basu and give him a fresh lease of life,” he said.
