In the city for a seminar on ‘Climate and Change - Beyond Copenhagen’, the director general of Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ajay Mathur, today emphasised on the need of imposing higher penalties against such companies.
“We will award certificates to those companies that manage to achieve the (energy) reduction target. As the market demand is moving towards labelled products, people are willing to pay a little extra to buy goods that have the energy efficiency label,” said Mathur.
He added: “We are seeking an amendment whereby the penalty for non-compliance will be related to the cost of energy.”
On the energy conservation building code, Mathur said around 500 official complexes across the country have incorporated the code.
He added: “We have been pushing for mandatory environmental clearance for all new buildings. Awareness in this regard is increasing gradually.” The goal is to save 20 million tonne equivalent of oil each year by 2012 and installation of 10,000 MW of electrical capacity, added Mathur.
