Sounds familiar? Yes, almost every Internet literate person has faced it and also forwarded the same. While the tech-savvy generation ridicules the age-old superstitions, they fail to prevent themselves from falling into the trap of this new-age superstition that finds place in almost every inbox.

Roohi Ahmed, content writer, appeared irritated even at the mention of chain mails, yet she agreed that she too fears, bad luck would befall if she fails to forward the mail to given number of people. "It is only recently that I realised that I have an option of deleting the mail from my inbox without opening it, however, it is not always possible because the subject does not specify. Once I deleted a chain mail and ignored another and I had a bad day at my office. My friend, who is a firm believer of such mails, convinced me that it was because of those mails. Though I don't believe her completely, but I do take precautions. And if it only involves forwarding, I do it."

"I know it is superstitious but I also fear the consequences and end up sending it to everyone I can manage. Though I don't expect something good out of it, at least I don't want anything bad to happen, once I got an SMS which said unless you forward it to a particular number of people you would flunk your exams. It was scary. And to add to it I was short of balance. I couldn't stop cursing the person who sent it to me" says Monica Vanarase, student, also adding, "and I know quite well that many of those forwards are just to irritate people, but there isn't much that can be done about it".

Explaining her view on such mails, Laxmi Iyer, an engineering student, says, "Avoiding bad luck when you can, is not superstition. It is just about forwarding mails and it hardly takes any time. Anyways I forget about it after forwarding."

Also Deepti Sharma, student, who believes, disposing of these good luck mails could result in a turn of events adds, "Honestly speaking each time I get any such mail I fear something might go wrong if I discard it. Convincing yourself against it, is the toughest job, and eventually I end up forwarding it".

While there are many who believe in the genuineness of such chain mails, there are their counterparts who feel exactly the opposite. Isha Dixit, student, disregards such chain mails as mere trash. She says, "It's a ploy to make those who believe in it apprehensive about it. There are people who actually worry about not sending it to the required number of individuals; nevertheless on being asked about whether they got the desired results, I fail to get an answer. Practically speaking it is all fake".
