Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti today said the state government has initiated talks with the Tatas on taking back about 1000 acres of land given to the latter for the now abandoned Nano factory in Singur.
Sources said the state government has told the Tatas that as per the agreement, there was supposed to be a Nano factory on Singur land. But since the land is left unused, it should be returned.
Recently, the state government had asked the railways to set up a coach factory on the land following which Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee went public, asking the former to first get the land back from the Tatas.
Earlier, Tata group chairman Ratan Tata had expressed his
willingness to return the land if compensated.
In an unrelated development, the chief secretary hinted that the CAB should own up responsibility for power outage during the one dayer at the Eden Gardens. “Penal action will be taken against whoever is responsible. But one must understand that if one invites someone to eat at home and the food is bad, one should own up the responsibility instead of accusing the caterer,” said the chief secretary. State Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen was more direct. “The CAB should own up responsibility for what happened,” he said.

Thanks to state govt for its apparently earnest endeavour to win back Singur land from Tata.True to its reputation and goodwill Tata most probably won't delay in returning the land. Then ball will be in Didi's court. Now onus will be on Didi to make railway coach factory as promised. One question haunts us-will not the return of much talked about 400 acre land to the so called unwilling farmers stand in the way and mar the projec?Let us wait and watch.
