Kolkata West Bengal has something to rejoice about after having been tagged as a state with one of the best power transmission systems recently. As part of the power sector reforms, the government has unbundled the West Bengal State Electricity Board into two companies in 2007 for better distribution of transmission. The West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (WBSETCL) and the West Bengal State Electricity Distrubution Copany Ltd (WBSEDCL) became two arms of the government of which the former started functioning from April 1, 2007. Since inception WBSETCL made significant progress during its first year of operation with the company making a profit of Rs 81 crore with a turnover of Rs 428 crore during its first fiscal in March last year.

Saluting the work and performance of the transmission body, the Union ministry of Power through the Central Electricity Authority adjudged WBSETCL for best transmission system availability award with gold shied for the year 2007-08.
