Bengal eves make it to zonal semis

Kolkata, December 31 West Bengal women, along with Manipur from Group A, moved into the semi-finals of the 12th Inter-Zonal National Handball Championship being held at the Spandan Stadium at Burdwan on Saturday. The Chhattisgarh ladies, too, made it to the last-four stage from Group B, securing two victories.

Manipur eves won all their league matches to finish their tally on six points, while West Bengal won two games for four points to end second-best in their group. The WB eves defeated Orissa 12-6 in the last league game of the group yesterday.

The scenario in the men’s section, too, became clear with all the semi-finalists being identified from Group A and B. Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh made it from Group A with three wins each and will play each other to decide the group-topper and the runner-up.

Similarly, Karnataka and Punjab reached the knock-out stage from Group B. Karnataka topped the group with two wins and a draw to log with five points while Punjab, who lost to Karnataka narrowly in a keenly fought contest, defeated Haryana in a crucial league match by 26 goals to 23 to win two league matches to log with four crucial points. The zonal tournament’s finals are slated to be played on Monday.
