Kolkata With the Centre mounting pressure on the state to enhance coastal security the government is moving fast on this issue.

While the construction of four coastal police stations has already been started, the government has created 300 posts for both constables and officers. The Public Service Commission has been asked to make the recruitment.

At the request of the Navy the government “has called a meeting at the Writers’ Buildings on coastal security on January 28”, state Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen told The Indian Express. The meeting will be attended by, apart from representatives of the Navy and Coast Guard, senior officials of the state government.

Defence spokesperson Group Captain R K Das told The Indian Express: “The Navy has been playing a very pro-active role not only in coastal security but issues like tackling piracy. I can confirm to you that naval officials will be present there at the meeting, but I cannot tell you who has called the meeting or who has requested for the meeting.”

Six police stations are coming up at the time being — at Hemnagar in North 24-Parganas district, Dighamohana, Talpatti, Haldibari, all in East Midnapore district and Frasergunj and Krishorimohanpur in South 24-Parganas district.

The construction of buildings have been started in the first four police stations.

At present the job of coastal policing at the four places is being carried out from the existing police stations. The state government has sanctioned two more police stations and two outposts for the coastal police. In all 17 outposts are going to be set up.

The state government is also buying sophisticated weapons, trawlers, mechanised boats and other equipment for the force. The entire fund is coming from the Centre, which is keen on strengthening coastal security following the Mumbai terror attack.
