SP state president Vijay Upadhayay said he has been associated with Singh since the time of students’ politics and will take the path chosen by Singh.
“We are hurt by the comments made by some party leaders about Amar Singh. The remarks were uncalled for. We do not want to add fire to the controversy so we are keeping quiet,” said Upadhyay while speaking to The Indian Express.
Upadhayay, who contested the parliamentary elections from Howrah , however, said Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav are inseparable and hoped a resolution will come soon.
“We are hopeful today after netaji (Mulayam) said this is an internal matter of the party and it will be resolved amicably. He has also assured that (Singh’s) resignation will not be accepted, which is a great relief to us,” he said.
Upadhayay is known to be a close aide of Singh, who did his schooling and college from Kolkata. Before the parliamentary elections in May last year, when Upadhayay was attacked by unidentified goons Singh had rushed to see him the next day.
Samajwadi Party had contested the last election in six parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal — Howrah , Krishnagar, Birbhum, Diamond Harbour , Behrampore and Murshidabad. The party received most votes in Birbhum (about 30,000) and Howrah (18,000 votes).
