Kolkata The Student Federation of India (SFI), a CPM-backed wing, suffered a major setback at the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) on Wednesday as of the 54 seats it won only four in the undergraduate council elections.

While the Independents Consolidation (IC) won with a landslide majority with 49 seats, the remaining seat went to an independent candidate.

The SFI could manage two seats each in the information technology and the architecture departments. This year, the SFI campaign was led by students like Russel Aziz, son of the CPM leader Mohammed Salim.

“The elections have proved it beyond doubt that SFI has lost its stronghold in the university. Since the last three years, mostly SFI members have been responsible for the unrest in the campus,” said Debayan Das, IC spokesperson.

The SFI, however, cried foul over the involvement of teachers in the election. “We could have done better had the teachers not threatened students to vote against the SFI. We will continue our struggle,” said Subhasis Bhattacharjee, president of SFI, Howrah district .

“The elected representatives will form a student body in the next 10 days. We hope that the body will help in the proper functioning of the university,” said an university official.

In the 2006 union elections, while SFI had won 13 seats, IC had bagged the remaining 27 seats.
