Kolkata, February 7 The Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) in Shibpur will select students on the basis of their scores in the Joint Entrance Examination for the 2008-09 session.

This academic session will also see the university being upgraded to the level of Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST).

“This year we have been allowed to admit students on the results of the Joint Entrance Examination,” said BESU Vice-Chancellor N R Banerjea.

Earlier, the university was expected to take the students on the basis of the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) exam.

The university admits more than 400 students each year.

After getting Central status, the university also entered into an agreement to ensure that at least 50 per cent students are from the state.

With JEE being made the sole criteria for admission, most of the students will be from the state.

After being recognised as the first IIEST in the country, BESU is expected to receive about Rs 530 crore from the Centre during the Eleventh Five Year Plan.
