Pune Arogya Sena, an organisation that takes up social health related issues has strongly demanded that criminal charges under culpable homicide be fixed against officers of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) for granting permission to Sai Industries under the ‘green’ category— though it falls in the ‘red’ zone meaning highly polluting industry.

An explosion had occurred at the industry located at MIDC, Bhosari on August 27,2008, which resulted in the death of ten women workers and injured another ten workers. Arogya Sena chief Abhijit Vaidya and his team conducted their own investigations.

Apart from obtaining documents via Right to Information Act they have alleged that the then Regional Officer of MPCB V N Mundhe had granted the certificate to the industry and cleared it from charges and declared it a non-polluting industry, which comes under the green category.

Vaidya has sent a list of documents to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan demanding an impartial probe with a team consisting of officers from NEERI, finance and environment departments. He has demanded the suspension of officers of MPCB including Mundhe.

Vaidya told media persons on Wednesday that the company had applied for celluloid nitrate sheet, which falls under the red category of a polluting industry. Vaidya also questioned Mundhe’s role in superseding the powers granted to the subordinate officers and instead intervening and granting a certificate to the industry under the green category.
