Chandigarh, February 22 The Chandigarh Administration has invited bids from consultants and consortiums to conduct the detailed project report for the construction of an elevated highway to link Chandigarh and Panchkula through the Madhya Marg.

The administration has proposed to construct the highway from Transport Chowk to Manimajra traffic lights (Housing Board) at the estimated cost of Rs 173 crore.

According to officials, the highway is justified keeping in mind the fact that only 4 per cent commuters use public transport and the rest have their personal vehicles.

There are over 6 lakh personal vehicles in the city. A recent study reveals that Madhya Marg up to UT and the boundary on Panchkula side caters to maximum interstate and local traffic.

The highway would be constructed under the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The scope of the DPR is to undertake traffic survey, analysis on different junctions, topographic survey and feasibility study, geo-technical investigation, structural design basis for elevated road, span arrangement, primary sections and technical specifications, and preparation of general arrangement working drawings.

The study would also assess the numbers of trees to be cut in the process of construction. The last date for consultants to apply with the administration is March 17.
