Kolkata Appearing before the judicial commission, Gautam Deb, the former CPM Minister and the newly-elected party district committee secretary of the North 24-Parganas, revealed that Mostafa Bin Kasem, the party MLA who allegedly committed suicide at MLA hostel last year, had requested Deb to exempt him from contesting Assembly polls last year. Justice D P Sengupta, the chairperson of the judicial commission had constituted the probe into the death of Bin Kasem, had asked Deb why Kasem had mentioned his name in the suicide note along with other three leaders.

Deb said he did not create any pressure on him to contest the Assembly polls when Kasem had expressed his unwillingness to contest the polls on grounds of poor health. Deb said he had convinced him to contest the Assembly polls.

After the Assembly polls, on May 29, last year, Bin Kasem, CPIM MLA from Basirhat (North) had allegedly jumped from his room in the MLA hostel at Kyd street . The police had recovered a suicide note from his room. In the suicide note, Kasem had mentioned the name of the four prominent leaders of the party - Gautam Deb, Amitava Nandy, Amitava Basu, and Tarit Topdar. According to the suicide note, they had created pressure on Kasem to contest the polls despite his ill health.
