Mumbai, February 1 The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday said it will take action against doctors and nurses if they are not careful with disposal of bio-medical waste. The Bombay High Court set-up committee recently submitted a report on various hospitals which are not complying with the Bio-medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 which is resulting in health hazards. BMC-run KEM hospital is one of the hospitals which was issued notice by the court.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Additional Municipal Corporation Kishore Gajbhiye said there is nothing wrong with the disposal of bio-medical waste in civic hospital. “However, as the report has identified few lapses on part of the employees (cleaners) resulting in mixing of bio-medical waste with solid waste,” he said.

He added sometimes the sweepers unintentionally mix bio-medical waste including cotton and syringe with the regular solid waste. “We will ask the doctors and nurses to be extra careful and if still there in non-compliance of bio-medical waste, we will take action against them,” he said.

Gajbhiye met the authorities of Bhagwati hospital and KEM hospital on Friday and he said appropriate steps will be taken by the civic administration for strict compliance of rules and proper segregation of bio-medical waste will be ensured.
