Ahmedabad, February 29 The ruling BJP has decried the Union Budget as a populist move to entice the vote bank before next year’s Parliamentary polls.

State BJP spokesperson IK Jadeja said the budget has meted out a step motherly treatment to Gujarat. “While the Union Finance Minister has emulated many schemes initiated by the Gujarat government, its step motherly treatment towards the state is indeed a sad experience,” he said.

BJP state president Parsottam Rupala too decried the budget, terming it directionless and anti-people and devoted to vote-bank politics. He said the finance minister has made a sacrilege by using a sacrosanct financial document for gaining political mileage.

Former spokesperson and Gujarat state secretary Vijay Rupani too came down heavily on the budget and said that the move to write off the farmer’s debts was misleading. “Had they made this declaration in time, more than 30 thousand farmers in the country wouldn’t have committed suicide,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat unit of the NCP has welcomed the budget. Party state president Jayant Patel said it is pro-people and positive.

“The efforts of Union Agriculture Minister and NCP national president Sharad Power, is visible in the huge relief granted to the agricultural sector. The endeavours will ensure that in the coming days, no farmer will have to resort to ending his life for fear of debt,” Patel said.

The newly formed New Socialist Movement (NSM) was, however, critical. Amrish Patel, General

Secretary of the party said the budget had in fact completely over looked the majority of the masses, including the Adivasis and the marginalized.

“Coconuts may grow but what is in it for a crow? Apart from UPA politics, the budget has little to offer to the toiling masses,” he added.
