Chandigarh, January 6 The senior BJP leader, Satya Pal Jain, today demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of a Hallomajra resident under mysterious circumstances. Alleging that the resident died in police custody, Jain said the BJP legal cell has extended full support to the family of the deceased to fight the case in court.

Addressing the mediapersons at his party office, Jain claimed that Nirmal Singh, who was running a telephone booth had no past criminal record and the police took him away in a Gypsy before his body was found in a mortuary. He said senior BJP leaders have visited the family of Singh after which they came to know that the police have been now trying to hush up the matter.

“Why the police are not registering the FIR of murder and why they are not making the postmortem report public. BJP demands a CBI probe as the local police cannot carry out proper investigation,” he said.

Jain said law and order situation in Chandigarh was deteriorating, but the Union government and the Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, were paying no attention towards it. He claimed that in the past six-seven months this is the second case in which an innocent resident has died in the police custody.

He said that it was a matter of shame that none of the senior officials from the UT Administration and Police Department have bothered to visit the family of deceased and nor did they announce any aid to the family. He said shortly the BJP leaders from Chandigarh would seek an appointment from the Union Home Minister to discuss the law and order situation in Chandigarh.
