Chandigarh, March 6 Senior BJP leader Satya Pal Jain today visited Sector 47, where the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) had carried out an anti-encroachment drive recently.

After meeting the residents, he alleged that the Congress-led UPA government is responsible for the large-scale demolitions carried out in residential areas in various parts of the city during the last four years.

Jain said that Congress leaders had earlier claimed that they will not permit any demolitions in the residential areas in the city.

He added that if they are serious about curbing demolitions, they should get clear orders issued from the Central government.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Mayor Pardeep Chhabra brushed aside the allegations.

He said that after the demolition drive, he, alongwith the residents and the office bearers of the Chandigarh Housing Board Federation, met UT Adviser Pradip Mehra and demanded allowing need-based changes.

“It is an old habit of the BJP to criticise the Congress and Union Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal on every issue. The BJP leaders should know that the recent demolition was carried out on the directions of the court and not the Congress,” he added
