Junagadh, February 13 With the civic poll scheduled for February 17 at Visavadar, the prospects for the BJP looked murky with the brother of a party legislator being arrested and booked for assault. Ravji Bhalala, brother of MLA Kanu Bhalala was arrested on Wednesday for slapping and threatening a government servant and preventing him from discharging his duty. The complainant was B M Makawana, a deputy mamalatdar-cum-circle inspector. Bhalala has been booked under Sections 332, 504 and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code. On Saturday, according to the complaint, Makawana had stopped a truck loaded with stones used in construction work and found that it was running illegally -- without paying royalty liable on building stone found from mines.

He detained the truck and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000. But Ravji Bhalala allegedly rushed to the mamalatdar's office and allegedly threatened Makawana with dire consequences. "I am the brother of the BJP MLA. The truck is owned by the MLA... how dare you stop it? I will have you transferred," the accused was quoted as saying. Later in the evening, when Makawana was waiting for a bus at the Visavadar bus station, Bhalala found him there, abused him and slapped him repeatedly, the police said. Makawana then approached the police and lodged a complaint. Criticising the incident, the Gujarat State Revenue Employees' Union submitted a memorandum to the district collector on Wednesday afternoon and demanded stern action against the accused. The union's Junagadh chapter president Jahangir Bloch said: "We have demanded adequate safety and security for Makawana and action against the accused." He said all employees should be given protection while performing their duty.
