Pune Supriya sule may have her task cut out in Baramati constituency where her father, Sharad Pawar, reigned supreme for 25 years. Unlike in the past, when the BJP sank without a trace in Baramati, the party this time is raring to go.

Banking on the belief that Sule’s popularity will not measure up to her father’s charisma, the BJP is looking at the possibility of fielding either Hema Malini or Smriti Irani, both known for their crowd pulling abilities.

The BJP’s Pune district rural chief, Digambar Begde said they are pitching for either of the actresses as both have it in them to pull off a major coup in Pawar’s bastion. “There is a strong demand from the party rank and file to field either Hema Malini or Smriti Irani from Baramati. The BJP has a realistic chance to win the seat this time,” he said.

Hema Malini has been a constant visitor to Pune, where she has wowed the audience with her dancing skills and her ability to get along with the masses. Smriti Irani is also popular figure here.

Some party leaders argue that given her experience of contesting Lok Sabha election, Irani should be fielded instead of Malini , who may find it difficult to make the right preparations in the limited time available. Irani had contested the last election from New Delhi, where Kapil Sibal of Congress trounced her. When contacted, Irani said, “I don’t want to talk about it. It’s all speculation.”

Begde, however, said a recommendation has been sent to state party chief Nitin Gadkari and party general secretary Gopinath Munde. “I have been told that both names are under consideration. It looks like either of the two will be fielded. We will have no problem with either of them,” he said.

NCP leaders are unfazed by the BJP’s plans. Sule, who began her campaign well in advance, has had a headstart. “She has already carved a niche for herself among the masses,” said NCP leader Vijay Lande.

But there is no denying the fact that for Sule, a Rajya Sabha MP, family prestige will be at stake. Her father has won Baramati since 1984, with margins exceeding 2 lakh votes. “Only during the Rajiv Gandhi wave did he have to stretch himself. Otherwise Pawar has won even without campaigning,” Lande said.
