Ahmedabad BJP veteran leader and Member of Parliament from Jaipur, Girdharilal Bhargav, died in Ahmedabad on Sunday morning following a heart attack. The six-time MP is survived by wife

Malti, son Manoj and three daughters.

Bhargav, 73, who had come here on March 6 with members of Rajbhasha committee, had complained of chest pain on Sunday morning and was brought to Apollo Hospital for treatment.

He was named as the BJP candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from his constituency. His funeral will be held in Jaipur on Monday, sources said.

Though Bharghav was elected for six terms to Lok Sabha, Bhargava was never given any ministrial post at the Centre during the NDA regime.

He was immensely popular among the labour class and had headed associations of rickshaw drivers and horse cart operators in Rajasthan for years, besides being the president of All India Bhargav Sabha.

Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma, Chief Minister Narendra Modi and BJP state president Purushottam Rupala visited the hospital to pay their respects.

Sources said that Modi has offered a chopper to Bhargav’s son to take away his body to Rajasthan at the earliest.

Union Minister for Environment and Forests Namo Narayan Meena expressing his grief over Bhargawa’s demise said he was simple, cordial and will be remembered as one of the best political leaders in his times.

In a condolence message, Lok Sabha Speaker and CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee expressing deep shock at his demise, said: “Bhargava made commendable contribution in strengthening the democratic institutions in both Rajasthan and at the national level as a suave politician and veteran parliamentarian.”
