Vadodara, January 2 In a bid to encourage the concept of 'Samras village' introduced by the Narendra Modi government, the BJP MP, MLAs and panchayat members in Vadodara district have announced rewards for those panchayats that will appoint the local body by consensus instead of going to polls.

MP Jayaben Thakkar has announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for Mahila Samras village panchayat and Rs 1 lakh for a general Samras village panchayat. Recently elected BJP MLAs like Upendrasinh Gohil from Vadodara Rural, Madhu Srivastava from Waghodia, Gulab Rathwa from Chhota Udepur and Sankheda's Abhesinh Tadvi have also announced extra allocation of grants from their quota for the villages opting against polls.

The announcement was made after the recent district administration meeting in the district. The state government already has a scheme of financial incentives for villages opting for Samras. In Vadodara, the district panchayat president Rajesh Patel also chaired a meeting wherein additional incentives were discussed.

However, the initiative has received flak from the Congress party and others. Vadodara Congress president Ranjit Rathwa said the concept is suitable only for smaller villagers or in case of reservation, as reaching consensus is difficult in spite of incentives.

Of the 13,924 gram panchayats in the state, 1,441 will go to elections on January 20. Vadodara is one of the three districts having the highest number of village panchayats. Jamnagar has 300 villages, followed by Vadodara with 232.
