Khanna More than 100 activists of Bhartia Kisan Union (BKU) led by its national president Balbir Singh Rajewal staged a dharna in front of the SDM’s office at Samrala on Wednesday.

The farmers were protesting against the “false case” registered by the police against the union’s block president Muktiar Singh, on the basis of a complaint lodged by panchayat officer Santokh Singh.

The agitating farmers said that the dharna would continue till withdrawal of the case against Mukhtiar Singh. National president of BKU Balbir Singh Rajewal alleged that case was registered by Samrala police without giving audience to Mukhtiar Singh. Rajewal also demanded action against the panchayat officer for allegedly giving false information to police and the “erring” police officer.

When contacted, panchayat officer Santokh Singh said, “Muktiar Singh was called to the office regarding a dispute with his brother Harminder Singh where he started abusing me and interfered in my duty.”

When contacted, Ravinder Loomba, DSP at Samrala, said, “Mukhtiar Singh was told to get his statement recorded but he did not turn up. The case was registered as per the complaint lodged by Santokh Singh.” Loomba said, “If Muktiar Singh and farmers are not satisfied, they can apprise us of their point of view to and a fresh inquiry can be initiated.”
