Surat A 60-year-old woman, mother of a jobless diamond polisher, succumbed to her burn injuries at the SMIMMER Hospital here on Tuesday. The woman, Jeevi Patel, had set herself ablaze in Ranuja Dham society of Varachha on Sunday, apparently under depression after her son, Suresh Chhagan Patel (34), was rendered jobless.

Jeevi was alone in the house when she took the drastic step. Neighbours had rushed her to the hospital and she was undergoing treatment in the ICU. On Tuesday evening, she was declared dead. This is the second such incident wherein a woman and mother of a diamond polisher in Varachha committed suicide due to the financial crisis.

Suresh is a resident of Municipal Tenement at Katargam and native of Bhavnagar, was working with the Sheetal Diamonds at Katargam as a diamond polisher.

Nearly 25 days ago, he, along with 150 diamond workers, was asked not to come to the factory.

Katargam police Sub Inspector R C Palande said: "We have found that Jeevi was under depression as the family faced great financial crisis. Her husband, who was also a diamond polisher, died 10 years ago. After this, responsibility of the entire family came on the shoulders of Suresh."

Suresh was the only bread earner in the family and it had become difficult for him to survive with his family members, as a result of which, he had sent his wife and two children to her in-laws place 15 days ago.
