Since 2008, corporators have been complaining about water shortage and the issue has continued to grab attention for a quite some time. The general body meeting on Monday was overshadowed by the discussion on water woes. BJP corporator Yogesh Sagar said the civic officials had inflated the water shortage and created a false crisis. “There is enough water in the city — 3400 mld — which should be equally distributed. If it’s done, each Mumbaikar will get 250 litres of water a day,” he said.

Sagar said that the civic administration needed to supply water as per population density and not as per the importance of the areas. According to the figures provided by Sagar, western suburbs with a population of 60 lakh is supplied 1280 mld water a day. City area with 35 lakh population gets 1142 mld water while eastern suburbs with 36 lakh population gets 925 mld water.

Another corporator Ashish Shellar said the civic officials should be blamed for inequitable distribution of water. The shortage of water is around 1000 mld, he said. “Civic officials do not reveal the true picture of water crisis in the city. They have been giving different versions and figures of the shortage to different sections and thus created a misdemeanor amongst people,” he said. “We should be given in writing on a signed bond paper about the shortage or the civic officials should be subjected to narco analysis test,” Shellar said.
