The HC had pulled up the BMC on Thursday stating the illegal hoardings cluttered the city’s skyline and asked the civic administration if a single illegal hoarding has been demolished. The HC has asked the civic body to submit a report in six weeks time.
On Friday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (city), RA Rajeev said that he will not be able to comment on the issue till he receives and reads the HC orders. However, he added, “We have been taking action against illegal hoardings. In November we demolished over 75,000 hoardings and from January 1 to January 31 around 37,000 hoardings — including political banners, boards and flags — were brought down,” he said. “The civic body has since November collected Rs 7.85 lakh fine from political and religious organisations,” he added.
Rajeev also said that in the last few days 217 hoardings were demolished from heritage buildings (123), Coastal Regulation Zone (21) and others (73). He added that the civic administration has been unable to take action on 245 hoardings as the matter is sub-judiced. He said that the civic body has already sent the new hoarding guidelines to the HC and will submit the report after receiving the orders.
