Addressing a press conference, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Kishore Gajbhiye said that the civic administration has updated its disaster management control plan. “As per the directions of state government, BMC will construct cyclone shelters on open plots near the coast line. These shelters will be like school buildings having large halls to accommodate the rescuers. The shelters will provide temporary accommodation but will be used to during monsoon,” he said.
The civic administration is currently discussing the matter with the group leaders of political parties in BMC. “Once it is approved, we will select the open plots for construction. Even if the construction is delayed, temporary accommodation will be provided during this monsoon,” he said.
Gajbhiye also said that for the coming year, BMC will be concentrating on improving the communication system during monsoon. “There are 54 VHF sets with the civic body, however only 11 are functional. We will repair them soon. Also, we are working on the TETRA system for communication during disasters,” he said.
