Mumbai, January 3 In an apparent bid to consolidate its position as the messiah of Marathi Manoos, the working class and the Mumbaiite, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to put up statues of working class persons at various traffic junctions in the city. To begin with, a statue of a vegetable vendor was unveiled by Sena’s executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday near Plaza theatre at Dadar.

Speaking on the occasion, Uddhav said that Mumbai was standing on the sweat and blood of the working class. He said that the role of those who toiled manually for the development of the city was significant one and required to be acknowledged.

Among other statues which are to be put up by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in various parts of the metropolis are the statue of R K Laxman’s common man in Fort; a Marathi woman in a nine-yard long saree near Ruia College, Matunga; and a fisher-woman at Mahim; a dabbawallah at Lower Parel.

The gesture is a part of the Sena’s agenda to consolidate its votebank in the city before the assembly and Lok Sabha elections scheduled next year.
