Mumbai, January 11 The preliminary survey of trees in 18 wards of the city has revealed that there are 12 lakh trees in these wards and the city’s green cover has increased by four lakh trees. The boost in the figures has come after the criteria for measuring the height and diameter of the trees was modified.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is currently undertaking detailed tree census across 24 wards of the city. The survey from 18 wards revealed that there are 12.58 lakh trees in the city. As per the survey, C ward has the least number of trees (3,927) and K (east) along with K (west) and M (west) have more than 1 lakh trees.

Addressing a press conference, Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said that the rise in the figures could be because of the revised norms. “We have counted the trees as per the national norms. But there is over all rise in tree plantation. Those cutting the trees for developmental projects are also re-planting as per the norms,” he said.
