In order to provide a big leap to the sports infrastructure at Punjabi University, Patiala, Varsity Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh said adequate funds for the same have been earmarked for the same and the setting up tennis courts in the Varsity. At present, the Varsity does not have any infrastructure with regard to tennis. The decision to set up the tennis courts had been taken sometime ago, to help promote talent in the international sport. Besides, the Varsity is also aiming at setting up an indoor shooting range, keeping in view the keen interest among the budding shooters of the region.

The VC said that the proposal in this regard would soon be made and funds have been sought from the state as well as Central government for establishing the same.

A proposal to set up a cricket stadium within the University complex was also pending for quite sometime with the Punjab government and efforts would be made to push through the proposal at an early date.

The emphasis on improving sports infrastructure within the Varsity complex has come about in view of the University winning the prestigious Maulana Azad Trophy for excellence in sports.

This is for the first time in the 46-year history of the Varsity that it had won the Trophy and the Vc said, "After winning the same, it had become a responsibility of the University authorities to lay more emphasis on sports now."
