Vadodara, December 15 A day before the second and last phase of polling, the body of Arjunsinh Chauhan, son-in-law of Bharatiya Jan Shakti (BJS) candidate Shanta Parmar and Eral rape and murder case convict Chandrasinh, was recovered from a lake near Pavagadh in Halol on Friday morning. Chauhan had been missing from his house since the last two days. Police are investigating whether Chauhan's death was an accident or murder.

Chauhan's son and Shantaben's campaign manager in Kalol, Shailendra alleged that the murder was politically motivated, though he refused to comment on the suspects. He said, "My father was murdered to intimidate us as Shantaben is enjoying popular support."

Parmar and her immediate family, residents of Eral village, have been provided extra security till the completion of polls. Additional police forces have also been posted in Sureli, Chauhan’s ancestral village.

Panchmahals Superintendent of Police Dipanker Trivedi visited the spot where the body was found. He said, "There are some skid marks on the road and there is little damage to his motorcycle. However, the post-mortem report will establish the facts. He could have either accidentally skidded and fallen into the lake or deliberately pushed," Trivedi said.

He added that the police were also trying to ascertain Chauhan's activities since the day he went missing.

Arjunsinh Chauhan was formerly the head of Panchmahals Congress, before taking over as Acharya Sangh President (Panchmahals district). He was also the principal of the Khanpur Secondary School.

Sources close to Chauhan find his death suspicious. They said he rarely travelled to Pavagadh and did not have any friends or family there.

Meanwhile, Shanta Parmar and her family are in a state of shock as Chauhan's death is yet another blow to the family. At present, Chandrasinh, his son and Shantaben's three cousins are serving life sentences after being convicted of murder and rape in the 2001 Eral rape and murder case. A Godhra court had pronounced the judgement on October 30, widely believed to be the prime motivation behind spurring Shantaben into contesting the elections. She has been campaigning in the constituency with the slogan. ‘Baap bete jail main, aur Modi mahal mein’. (Father and son in jail, while Modi is in his palace)."
