Police said J D Suthar, the librarian, received an anynymous call about a bomb being planted at the SMC head office. The caller said the bomb would explode soon.
Suthar immediately informed Chief Fire Officer Kotwal and Security Officer Bhadoria about it. Chowk Bazaar Police along with dog squads started a search operation. The premises were evacuated, but nothing suspicious was found. Later the SMC officials were allowed to resume work.
Inspector B L Vavaiya said, “We have traced the number from where the call was made. It was made from a local telephone booth at Athwalines. The booth owner claimesd he had seen a man who had taken some coins and later dialled the number."
Bomb squad officials said during the last year, Surat Police received more than 95 bomb hoax calls, about explosives planted in schools and colleges, courts, trains and banks. They said police haven't made much success in arresting any of the hoax callers involved in these cases as most of them were made from local telephone booths, planted outside shops.
