Bon-fire, traditional songs mark fest

Ludhiana Lohri was celebrated at Hathi complex in PAU where Dr Manjit Singh Kang, vice-chancellor, PAU, was the chief guest while the Estate Officer, Dr Gurkirpal Singh was the guest of honour. The traditional bonfire, Lohri was lit by the Chief Guest.

The function started with the rendition of traditional song Sunder-Mundriye by the children who also presented different cultural items like poems, songs, rhymes, dances, skits, gidha, bhangra, etc. The children were given mementos for excelling in sports and cultural activities. The president of the Hathi Complex Residents’ Welfare Association, Dr Kamal Vatta highlighted the achievements of the association during the last year and thanked those present for their cooperation.

The Lohri festival was also organised in the Bougainvillea garden by the Department of Landscaping and Floriculture. Besides, faculty members, field, laboratory and office staff participated in the celebration.

Dr Kang hailed the efforts made for organising a colourful event in the university. He said that the Lohri function was a unique event that reminded him of his childhood when he used to celebrate Lohri with enthusiasm. He said that our festivals taught us to do righteous things. He wished all those present a bright time ahead.

Dr Amarjit Singh, former president of the Department of Agricultural Journalism, Languages and Culture, PAU and Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Additional Director of Communication, also participated. Dr Singh said that the Lohri of girl child should also be celebrated with enthusiasm.

He said that we ought to maintain our traditional values. Dr Ramesh Kumar, head of the department, while welcoming the participants said Lohri festival had a special place in the hearts of Punjabis. Dr Dhiman asked all those present to take a pledge on the Lohri day to work with dedication and commitment to make PAU scale new heights.
