Started in November by a 31-year-old Vikram Singh Chauhan, www.ifiwereabook.com, is a website that boasts of tie-ups with publishing houses like Random House India, Hay House, Harper Collins, Hachette Book Publishing India and Roli Books along with numerous other smaller publishers.
The idea is simply to let every writer see his writings take a book form. “I wanted to create something equivalent of the youtube for books. Sharing videos, and photos is all so easy, so why not do the same thing for books,” explains Chauhan.
Out of a total of 150 books that have been put up on the website in the past three months, 20 authors have been contacted offline by various publishing houses like Hay house, Sanbun and Undercover Pro, and the first book is coming out next month by a medium sized, Delhi-based publisher, Sanbun.
The book is Bundle of Joy, by first time author, Naveen Bachwani.
Another interesting feature of the site is that even if no publishing house takes up your book, the site can still get the book printed, which will then be sold on-line.
“The rights of the book remain with the writer, we just give his writings a real form. This way we cut down on the cost of the book, the writer can still be read, and earn a profit too,” says Chauhan.
