He slips into his roles with the ease of an eel, leaving no loose spaces, no rough ends to tug at the conscience. Whether as Dr Asthana of Munnabhai or Khurana of Khosla Ka Ghosla, Boman Irani has virtually lived the character he has played. Playing host for Bollywood ka Boss, Sahara Filmy’s new Bollywood Quiz Show that begins this Sunday is no different.

“I enjoy everything I do. I do that with every role I play. I am enjoying it so much that feel I am on a holiday. But don’t let my passion for cinema fool you, its hard work every step of the way,” says the charming Parsi shopkeeper turned photographer turned stage artist turned actor turned quiz show host. Phew!”

“I am an actor and while I enjoy doing the comedy roles, I am wary not to jump on the gravy train for after a while both the audience and I will get fed up of me doing the same thing over and over. I need to grow with every role I play, I owe it to my audiences to grow.”

Explaining the format of the show, Boman was quick to detail that the 240 participants selected after preliminary rounds were passionate about cinema and had lived it every minute of their lives. “I have always said while a film is made by the director, it is the audience which gives it life or death. And these are the people who have made a film a hit or a flop.”

He cites the instance of an elderly gentleman, coincidentally from Lucknow, who was grievously injured on a shoot but came back directly from hospital, arm in a sling, stitches on two sides of his face, using the famous words, ‘The show must go on!’

“When I see that kind of passion it excites me and prods me to give my best. This subject is very dear to me. I feel at home discussing Hindi cinema for when I speak of Balraj Sahni, Nargis ji and Sunil Dutt, I can see the same respect in the eyes of my contestants as I am feeling within. It makes me realise how important Home Work is, for there is often the danger of getting stumped by the man before you. The adrenaline rush is the same as though its the last ball of the last over and you have to hit a six,” he says, eyes twinkling with passion.
