Bowling might be terribly dated, but if you’re at a loose end, you can try some nine-pin action at The Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, that has opened the country’s first 24-lane bowling alley. Spread across 42,500 sq ft, this plush bowling alley with tangerine strip lighting on the ceiling comes equipped with two platinum lounges for privacy, karaoke rooms, an X Box 360 room and, smokers rejoice, the only smoking room in the mall. Called blu O, this fun destination is modelled on the lines of Thailand’s famous Blu-O bowling alley and is a joint venture between PVR Cinemas and Major Cineplex, Thailand. “We wanted to revive the concept of bowling by providing a space where the whole family can enjoy. So for those who don’t want to play, they can try singing at the karaoke bar,” says Gautam Dutta, Ceo, PVR blu O.

The entrance to blu O is lined up with shelves that are stocked with decorative pins. Divided in two sections of 12 bowling alleys each, blu O promotes the lighter side of bowling, so the balls emit a glow under the lit alleys each time you bowl. A separate blu O merchandise room offers various souvenirs like coasters, cups and glasses. And at Rs 175 per game (10 balls) during weekdays you have the option of one additional game till 6 pm. After 6 pm (the place is open till 2 am), blu O transforms into a mongrel between a lounge and a club where DJ Rummy churns out the latest techno tracks with the glow lights creating the right atmosphere.

During weekends, however, you have to shell out Rs 200 per game. With a central lounge comprising circular seats, the place evokes a chic feel. The fine-dining area in the platinum lounge where you may have to pay a cover charge of Rs 1,000 per person also extends up to the central lounge area. Stocked with Lebanese mezzes and sushi platters, the menu offers a healthy choice of global cuisine.
