Ahmedabad A day after brick kiln workers of about 40 brick kilns in the Adalaj area decided to join the strike called by around 8,000 workers of 20 brick kilns in Sanand, the owners of manufacturing units have finally agreed to increase the wage rate for per thousand bricks. The factory owners have agreed to upgrade the wage rates per 1,000 bricks to Rs 300. They workers had demanded Rs 350 per thousand bricks for this season.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on Saturday. With this, the workers have decided to join work from Sunday. While workers in the Adalaj area have already handed over their demand charter to the factory owners and have given consideration time for three days before going on a strike. However, other demands, like removal of the mandatory requirement of making an additional 100 bricks for every 1,000 bricks, sanitation, free housing, light, drinking water facilities and a crèche for children, remain unresolved.

Reena Parmar, a member of the Int Bhatta Majdoor Union, said: “The season for bricks will continue till Holi. So, the workers have not incurred any losses due to the strike, as the wage rate has increased substantially. Another consultation meet will be held between the workers and the factory owners to resolve the pending issues next week.”
