Norway to most of us is simply the land of snow and fjords. To some of course it’s also the land of Henrik Ibsen, playwright of the early 20th century. Yet, there is much more to Norwegian literature, than just Ibsen. Next weekend The Seagull Foundation for the Arts will play the host to three Norwegian authors on their maiden visit to the city in order to promote a better understanding of their literature.

Authors Lars Amund Vaage, Hanne Bramness and Herbjorg Wassmo will be a part of the group along with Gina Winge and Andrine Pollen of NORLA (Norwegian Literature Abroad) that will visit the city. While Wassmo, is the author of the critically claimed Tora trilogy that received the Literary Critics Award in 1982 along with the Bookseller’s Prize in 1983, Bramness is seen as one of the leading poets of her generation in Norway. A poet, editor translator and novelist, her works include books like I sin tid and Korrespondanse and was awarded the Dubloug Prize from the Swedish Academy in 2006. Her many translations include works by Mina Loy, Kamala Das, Denise Levertov and William Blake.

Vaage made his debut in 1979 with Øvelse kald vinter and has since then published several books, including novels, short stories, plays, poems and one children’s book. He was awarded the Critics Prize and the Aschehoug Prize in 1995.

Apart from a literary exchange session, there will also be a screening of I am Dina, an Ole Bornedal film, based on the novel by Wassmo. An epic drama that deals with a woman’s lust for life as well as a longing for death was also awarded the Air Canada’s People Choice Award for best Feature.

The session will be held on Febuary 9, at 6 pm at 46, Satish Mukherjee Road
