Sources in the BSF said that the smugglers were taking a herd of around 15 cattle across the border when they were challenged by the BSF.

Although they were asked to stop, the two tried to flee when they were shot at. One person died immediately while the other succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital.

He was taken to a hospital in Raiganj. “Both the smugglers have been found to be Bangladeshis. While one had come from Khaliaganj, the identity of the other is yet to be ascertained,” said S B Purnapatra, Superintendent of Police, South Dinajpur.

Meanwhile, the situation in the rest of the border area remained normal today. Vikas Chandra, DIG, BSF said the situation in the south Bengal border area has remained stable in spite of the happenings in Dinajpur.
