NOIDA Mayawati at 53. That’s the unofficial project Bahujan Samaj Party leaders are engaged in ahead of the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s birthday on Thursday.

But the party’s Meerut in-charge, Maluk Singh Nagar, is taking the “celebrations” to another level — into the world of radio jingles. Nagar, the only Congress MP from the state in 1998 and eyeing the Meerut Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming polls, has put out advertisements celebrating behenji’s birthday on FM 92.7.

The advertisement, being aired in four states, states: “Sabhi Meerut Lok Sabha constituency nagriko ko naye saal aur Mayawati ji ke janmdivas par Purv Meerut Lok Sabha MP Maluk Singh Nagar ki taraf se badhai (On behalf of former Meerut MP Maluk Singh Nagar, wishing all Meerut residents on the occasion of the New Year and Mayawati’s birthday).”

Brother of state irrigation minister Lakhi Ram Nagar, Nagar is also on a spending spree ahead of Mayawati’s birthday. “I have arranged for a bhandara in Meerut. Our partymen will distribute sarees and blankets to thousands of people who belong to economically- backward class-es. Tomorrow I will donate five ambulances to different Vidhan Sabha constituencies to mark the CM’s birthday.”

While Congress Ghaziabad MP Surendra Goyal called such celebrations a “waste”, his counterpart from Gautam Buddha Nagar, BJP’s Ashok Pradhan, said: “It’s another way of extorting from the public.”
