Lucknow, February 1 After four senior UP government officials have been suspended for praising the Gandhi family in the controversial book ‘Sultanpur Kal aur Aaj’, a call has now been given to punish the author.

The Mayawati government has also taken no action against BSP parliamentarian from Sultanpur, Mohammad Tahir.

The government officials suspended on Thursday included the district magistrate and the commissioner of the Faizabad division. In their messages, they had praised the book which glorifies the Gandhi family and congress for its contribution for Sultanpur.

But Tahir, too, had praised the book as well as the writer.

In his message in the book, he said the writer’s effort is praiseworthy and the book will be helpful for those willing to know about Sultanpur. He has wished for the success of the book.

Asked about action against Tahir, state president of BSP Swami Prasad Maurya said he was yet to read the book. “This thing has been brought to my notice, let me read the book and after that any decision will be taken,” he said.

BSP legislator from Sultanpur district, OP Singh, who had first complained about the book to the state government and the party leaders, said a criminal case should be lodged against the author, Dr Srikant Srivastava. “In the book, abusive language has been used against the ‘Bhale Sultani Rajpoots’ of district which has annoyed people,” said Singh. Also, the struggle of the people of Sultanpur against Emergency has not been mentioned, which is highly objectionable.

Dr Srivastava, the author and Regional Publicity Officer, after being dragged into the controversy in last October, had amended the book and circulated the new print. In the amended version, he has withdrawn some “objectionable” parts. But it was pointed out that the paragraphs praising the Gandhi family and peaceful atmosphere during Emergency have not been removed. Singh said the authorities should read the original print and on basis of it, punish the author.
