Kolkata After all the controversies encapsulating his land dreams, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is once again eyeing for land with an aim to develop the healthcare sector.

This time the government is looking forward to provide more land to the Chennai-based healthcare centre, Sankara Netralaya, to set up bigger units in the city.

At the inauguration of Sankara Netralaya, one of the most recognised super-specialty institutions for ophthalmic care at Eastern Metropolitian Bypass on Tuesday, Bhattacharjee expressed his desire to help the medical organisation with more land for a bigger hospital, which comprises research and training centres.

Sankara Netralaya, a brand that draws more than 25,000 patients every year from West Bengal to Chennai at their main eye care unit, has now opened its gates in Kolkata in a major way and intends to pursue it to surpass its Chennai standards. The organisation, which had a small unit set up earlier in the city, will now merge with the new eye care centre at Bypass.

“The small unit that was set up initially had limited facilities. We wanted to set up new and bigger centre in

the eastern region. This new facility is, however, just the beginning as we want a bigger hospital,” said Bhattacharjee.

SS Badrinath, founder chairman of Sankara Netralaya, stated that an additional 10 to 25 acres is required for starting facilities like a research and training unit.
