College, in the Assembly on March 19.
Last December, the Bill was placed in the Assembly, but it was referred to a 15-member Standing Committee. On Tuesday, the committee submitted its report and today it was passed by the Assembly even as the Congress and Trinamool Congress walked out of the House over the Sainbari murder case. “Come what may, the Bill is going to be placed in the Assembly on March 19. The Standing Committee has placed its report and it has been adopted by the Assembly today,” said Mohammad Masiha, chief whip of the Left Front.
But a furious Opposition, which criticised the report of the standing committee, wants the Bill to be stalled and instead be referred to a Select Committee. “The government seems to be in an utter haste because they know that they would not be in power after one year. The Bill is a part of CPM’s attempt to Stalinise the education process,” said Partha Chatterjee, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.
Chatterjee referred to a few recommendations of the Standing Committee which he said were “untenable”. “There are no clear cut guidelines on where the university will get money from. It says the university should launch disciplines like media studies, gender studies. This is absurd,” he added. But the Left Front government is confident that the Bill would be passed by the Assembly on March 19 and it would be historic for the 193-year-old college.
